Memory loss is one of the most feared occurrences of advancing age.
Recently, however, animal studies and isolated reports from people seem to indicate that using high doses of niacinamide, also called nicotinamide or vitamin B3, may be a promising method to maintain a healthy and vigorous memory function.
In general niacinamide has been known for a long time to be essential to the human health. Niacinamide promotes insulin secretion, detoxifies the body, reduces cholesterol levels in the blood, helps in the manufacture of a number of hormones, converts sugars into energy, etc.
An extreme form of deficiency of this vitamin is known as pellagra. Some of the symptoms are dementia, muscular weakness and the three D's: dementia, diarrhea and dermatitis. Small amounts of vitamin B3 usually takes care of this problem if it is recognized early enough.
Nicotinamide may also be useful in reversing or preventing fetal alcohol syndrome. In one study in mice the results show that nicotinamide can reverse the molecular, cellular, and behavioral effects of ethanol exposure on developing brains. While the beneficial effects observed were most pronounced when nicotinamide was given at the same time or shortly after alcohol exposure, the study suggests that there is a time window of a few hours during which treatment with nicotinamide might be effective. More studies are needed to determine exactly how nicotinamide protects neurons against alcohol-induced damage, but the data raise the possibility that nicotinamide treatment may provide a way to prevent some human cases of FAS.
Hope about the benefits of high doses of niacinamide for improving memory comes from the latest research published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.
The authors have released the following summary of their findings:
They first reiterate that memory loss is the signature feature of Alzheimer's disease, and therapies that prevent or delay its onset are urgently needed. Effective preventive strategies will likely be of the greatest and most widespread benefits. They evaluated the efficacy of Nicotinamide in reversing pathological findings in the brain of mice. The animals were from a group that had been treated to exhibit the typical changes seen in Alzheimer's disease. They found that giving water soluble oral niacinamide dramatically restored cognitive deficits that went in parallel with lowering the so called phosphorylated tau proteins that are typical for a number of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Post treatment the mice behaved as though they had never had the pathological changes.
They suggested that oral nicotinamide may represent a safe treatment for Alzheimer disease and other similar illnesses. Of more immediate importance is the fact that normal mice in the study that were treated with the high doses of niacinamide also had an improvement which consisted in the increase of the short term memory.
