This is a typical anthroposophical remedy. Rudolf Steiner points out that the Birch has the unique ability to separate functions that typically occur together in other plants  into two separate areas in the birch: the leaf and the bark. The birch tree succeeds through its special salt processes to cleanse its bark in such a way that it becomes nearly snow white. It thus can be used in the treatment of the various skin conditions or blemishes. From a planetary standpoint, birch is ruled by Venus.
