Astragalus has been used since antiquity as a potent tonic. It is believed to strengthen all body systems and to be a great remedy against fatigue, and is currently used in chronic fatigue syndrome. Studies have shown that it enhances the immune system. It is currently also used for fighting colds, especially of a chronic character. It speeds the overall healing processes, lowers blood pressure and seems to improve heart function. It has proven useful in stimulating the digestion, especially when digestive problems are accompanied by loose stools. It is helpful in treating poorly healing skin problems.
Rudolf Steiner valued astragalus highly. He used it for exhaustion syndromes, heart weakness and a tendency to swelling of the lymph nodes. He also prescribed it for a variety of nerve pains. He gives a fundamental understanding of this plant by pointing out that it not only has very strong root forces but that these root forces go through the entire plant all the way into its fruits and seeds in such a way that the whole plant has a dry, woody, almost stony character. As such, astragalus strengthens the entire nerves and senses organization. From a planetary point of view, Rudolf Steiner associates astragalus with Mercury.
