Lovage is a well-known spice that helps in indigestion, heartburn, bloated feeling, flatulence (gas) and to loosen secretions in both the respiratory and the digestive tract. It has also been known to help in menstrual irregularities. It has been shown to have a positive effect on the kidney and bladder system for prevention of urinary stone formation, as a diuretic and is helpful in urinary tract infections. The diuretic aspect apparently also helps explain why it is useful in removing lower legs edema (fluid swelling). Since it stimulates the metabolism it is also helpful in sore throats, gout, arthritic illnesses and migraines.
Rudolf Steiner praises the effects of lovage since it loosens an inappropriately strong connection between the life body and the soul forces. The soul forces can cause pain sensations when they are too deeply embedded in our organism. Lovage removes these pains, caused by spasms, in the direct area where it is applied. This allows it to be used against ear pain. When given as drops and reaching the intestinal tract it relieves colics/discomforts, but more importantly due to all of the above elements combined it helps to overcome food allergies.
