Ear Packs—Chamomile or Onion

(support for Ear Infections and Discomfort)

Supportive home care for ear infections and discomfort can include warm ear packs made with chamomile or onion.

For Chamomile Ear Packs:

  • Place a layer of Chamomile Forte Cream™ on a thin cotton cloth and fold into a small pouch the proper size to cover the ear.
  • Place the pouch loosely between two plates and put the plates in a covered pot on the stove with water and a steamer basket.
  • Turn the heat on high so that the steam warms the chamomile pack without making it too wet.
  • When the pack is warm (careful not too hot—avoid burns), remove and place over the affected ear.
  • Quickly put on a wool cap covering the ears or wrap a scarf around the head and chin also covering the ears.
  • Lay down with head/ear resting on a hot water bottle to keep the pack warm.
  • Can keep in place for 15-30 minutes as desired and may repeat several times per day.

For Onion Ear Packs:

  • Chop a fresh onion into small pieces.
  • Gently warm in a frying pan without oil for several minutes until warm and juices begin to flow.
  • Place some of the warmed onion on a cotton cloth and fold into a small pouch the proper size to cover the ear.
  • Place the pack on the affected ear—be sure the pouch is not too hot to cause burns.

Both of these packs provide relief from discomfort and support the healing process.  If you are unable to do the entire pack, even the warmth of the hot water bottle alone can provide comfort care when needed.
